Been seeing a few threads pop up about minimum investments for Gold IRAs, and it got me thinking about my own journey. Back when I first started looking into this after '08 (that crisis really woke me up, as I'm sure it did for many), I was mostly looking online from my little casa here in Phoenix. I had just retired from teaching and had about $150k in my rolled-over 403b, which felt like a decent chunk, but not enough to feel totally secure.
I remember some companies had really high minimums, like $50k or even $100k, especially for direct transfers. That felt a bit steep for someone still figuring out exactly how much exposure to precious metals I wanted. There were others down around $10k-$25k, which felt much more manageable. I ended up going with a company that allowed a $25k minimum for my initial transfer, and then I slowly added another $15k-20k over the next couple of years as I got more comfortable and the market fluctuated. I've heard some folks talk about even lower minimums now, like $5k, but I wonder if those come with higher fees or limited metal options. Has anyone seen that?
It’s important to remember that these minimums aren't just about the metals themselves, but often include the custodial and storage fees for the first year or two. I definitely factored that into my decision. For someone with, say, $50k-$75k to invest, it makes sense to go with a company that doesn't eat up a significant percentage of that just in setup costs. For me, that '08 shock was still fresh, and having those physical assets felt like the only way to truly diversify away from what felt like a very shaky paper system. What were your minimum experiences, especially for those with smaller portfolios?
