Minimum investment for Gold IRA - what's realistic?
- •Been doing a deep dive into Gold IRAs lately, and seeing a lot of conflicting info on minimum investment requirements.

Been doing a deep dive into Gold IRAs lately, and seeing a lot of conflicting info on minimum investment requirements. My family's always had a chunk of our wealth tied up in timberland and some old-school investment vehicles, but with some of the recent volatility and the sheer scale of the national debt, I'm seriously looking at diversifying a portion into physical gold within an IRA.
My portfolio's sitting around the $400k mark right now, mostly in a mix of stocks and some pretty conservative bonds. I'm not looking to move all of it into gold, obviously, but I'd like to get a decent, meaningful allocation. I'm seeing numbers from $10k all the way up to $50k as "minimums," and it's making my head spin. Like, is $10k even worth the fees for setup and storage? Part of the goal here is generational wealth preservation, so I'm thinking long-haul, 20+ years, not quick flips.
I'm based out of Spokane, WA, so any regional advice on custodians or specific dealers that serve this area well would be a bonus. Anyone here have experience going through the process with, say, $25k or $50k upfront? What was your total initial outlay including all the various fees? Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of? Really appreciate any insights from those who've actually done this.
