Minimum investment for a Gold IRA? My El Paso experience
- •Been doing a lot of late-night reading on Gold IRAs, specifically thinking about adding some more physical gold to my retirement holdings.
- •I’ve already got about $100k in my IRA, and I'm looking to roll over maybe 20-30% of that into a Gold IRA.
- •I’m an independent contractor, always hustling, so having that safety net really appeals to me.
Been doing a lot of late-night reading on Gold IRAs, specifically thinking about adding some more physical gold to my retirement holdings. Most of my current setup is in regular ETFs and a pretty diversified stock portfolio, but with all the economic uncertainty, especially down here on the border with Mexico, I’m getting antsy and want to secure some tangible assets. I’ve already got about $100k in my IRA, and I'm looking to roll over maybe 20-30% of that into a Gold IRA. I’m an independent contractor, always hustling, so having that safety net really appeals to me.
My main question is around minimum investment requirements. I've seen some companies advertising minimums as high as $50k, which feels a bit steep if I'm just trying to dip my toes in with a portion of my existing IRA. I’ve also seen some talking about $25k. Is there a generally accepted industry minimum, or does it really just vary wildly by custodian? I'm in El Paso, so I’m looking for something reliable, ideally with good customer support because I don’t have time to be chasing people down.
I’m thinking about starting with roughly $20k-$30k of gold, maybe a mix of coins and bars, and then adding more over time if things continue to feel… unstable. I’ve dealt with enough currency fluctuations in my work across borders to know that having something solid is key. Have any of you guys started a Gold IRA with a smaller amount, say in the $20k-$30k range? Or did you find that you really needed to commit to a higher minimum to get better rates or selection?
Any insights from folks who have recently opened one would be super helpful. What was your experience with the minimum investment, and which custodians were flexible? I'm really trying to make a smart move here without getting locked into something I'll regret.
