Just wanted to share a mini-success story for anyone on the fence about physical gold in their retirement. I originally rolled over about $100k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA back in 2018. As a military contractor, I've seen firsthand how quickly things can go sideways, and that really hammered home the need for some serious security in my portfolio, especially with all the talk about inflation and currency devaluation. Decided to go with a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maple Leafs.
Fast forward to now, and I just checked my statement. That initial $100k is sitting pretty at around $165k. Not life-changing money, but a solid 65% return in five years is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you consider the volatility we've seen in the stock market during that time. I'm based here in Jacksonville, and honestly, seeing that kind of growth in something tangible just gives me a peace of mind that my regular mutual funds can't quite replicate. It's a different kind of security.
I know some people bash gold as a "barbarous relic" and say it doesn't pay dividends, but for me, it's about wealth preservation and acting as a hedge. It's been exactly that. Even with the recent dips and climbs, the overall trend has been very favorable. I'm actually thinking of adding another $25-30k to it next year, depending on how things look.
Anyone else out there had a similar experience with their Gold IRA? Or maybe thinking about getting into one? For those doing their research, I found a lot of useful info on things like storage options and reputable dealers through the Learning Center. It really helped me understand the different types of coins and bars, and what to look for when choosing a custodian. What are your thoughts on allocating a good portion of a portfolio to physical gold for long-term security?
