So, dumping most of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been meaning to diversify out of tech stocks for a while now, given all the volatility we've seen lately. I was a senior PM at a pretty well-known SaaS company here in SF for about ten years, and while it was great, the market feels... fragile. My existing portfolio is around $250k, and I'm looking to roll over maybe $200k into metals. So not exactly a "small investor" but definitely not a whale either.

I've been doing a ton of research online, and honestly, the amount of conflicting info is doing my head in. Every other site seems to shill a different company, and it’s hard to tell who’s legit and who’s just trying to get a commission. Ideally, I want a company that's got a solid track record, transparent fees (this is HUGE for me – no hidden charges, please!), and good customer service. I'm based in San Francisco, so ideally, something that's easy to deal with remotely, obviously.

My main concerns are obviously the fees – storage, management, transaction. I'm going for the long haul here, so I want to make sure I'm not getting bled dry over 10-20 years. Anyone here with a similar portfolio size or experience with a rollover of this amount? Which companies did you consider, and who did you ultimately go with? What was your experience like? Any red flags to watch out for?

I'm open to both Gold and Silver. I'm thinking a split might be smart for diversification within the metals space. Any thoughts on that?

Hey, totally get wanting to diversify and the tech stock volatility is real. But have you really dug into the fees associated with a Gold IRA for that kind of rollover? Storage, insurance, and management can eat into your returns pretty quickly, especially compared to just holding physical gold yourself or a diversified precious metals ETF. For 200k, those fees could be significant over time. Just something to consider before you commit!

Totally get this. I did something similar a few years back, though for a slightly smaller amount. Left a FAANG company and wanted to diversify some of my old 401k out of tech. Ended up going with [COMPANY NAME REDACTED] and had a pretty smooth rollover process. They were transparent about fees and didn't try to upsell me on anything crazy. Definitely worth looking into for that ~$200k sweet spot you're talking about.

Hey, that's a decent chunk of change to move. Just curious, when you say "not whaling it," are you looking for a company that specializes in that mid-tier range, or just one that won't treat you like small potatoes if you're not dropping millions?
