Hey everyone,
Susan Clark here from chilly Minneapolis! Hope you're all having a solid week. I've been a lurker on this forum for a while, soaking up all the amazing advice, and now I finally have a question I'm hoping to get some real-world feedback on. As some of you might know, I'm a marketing executive by trade, so I spend my days strategizing, but when it comes to my own investments, sometimes the choices feel a bit… heavier. My Gold IRA is sitting pretty comfortably in the $180k range, and I'm really pushing towards that early retirement goal my husband and I have been dreaming about. We're talking lakeside cabin, grandkids visiting – the whole nine yards! That said, I'm looking to make my next purchase within the next quarter, and I'm a bit torn between Kilo bars and sticking with the smaller 10oz/1oz options.
My initial thought was, "Go for the Kilo! Less premium, more bang for my buck." And intellectually, that makes sense. When I first started this journey, probably about six or seven years ago now, I was primarily buying 1oz and 10oz bars to build up my position. Now that I have a more substantial amount in my IRA (thank goodness for smart planning and a bit of luck!), the Kilo bar seems like a more efficient way to acquire more gold. I'm eyeing another $15k-$20k purchase, and the thought of fewer individual items to track appeals to my organized marketing brain. However, a little voice in the back of my head (probably my inner "contingency planner") keeps whispering about liquidity and potential fractional selling down the line. What if I don't want to sell a whole Kilo all at once if we need to access some funds for an emergency or a big purchase pre-retirement?
So, I wanted to open it up to this experienced community. For those of you with Gold IRAs in the 100k+ range, what has been your strategy when it comes to larger purchases? Have you opted for Kilo bars to minimize premiums, or do you prefer the flexibility of smaller denominations like 10oz or even 1oz bars? Are there hidden downsides to Kilo bars I'm not considering, especially within an IRA context? I'm particularly interested in hearing about your experiences when it comes to selling or taking distributions. Any thoughts on how specific custodians handle these different bar sizes would also be incredibly helpful!
Thanks in advance for sharing your insights. It's truly invaluable to hear from people who've actually navigated these decisions.
Best,
Susan Clark
