Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a significant chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I've been eyeing this for a while, especially given all the volatility we've seen lately. Roughly 30% of my total portfolio, so we're talking a nice 100k+ chunk moving over. It feels good to have that diversification, especially after spending years in the banking world pre-retirement. Saw enough behind the scenes to know that relying solely on traditional paper assets can be a risky game.
The process itself was surprisingly smooth. I worked with a company recommended by a friend back in Portland, and they handled most of the paperwork. My old 401k was with a pretty standard provider, and they didn't put up too much of a fuss, which was a relief. The whole thing took about three weeks from first call to confirmation of the metals being securely stored. I opted for a mix of gold and silver coins – some American Gold Eagles and Canadian Silver Maples. Wanted something recognized and easily convertible if needed down the line.
Honestly, it's a huge weight off my mind. I know some folks view precious metals as a "doomsday" investment, but for me, it's just smart portfolio management. Looking at the current inflation rates and geopolitical instability, having a tangible asset that isn't tied directly to the whims of the stock market or government printing presses just makes sense. I'm not saying go 100% into gold, but as a hedge? Absolutely.
Anyone else here made a similar move recently? What was your experience like? And for those who are still on the fence, what are your biggest concerns or questions about a Gold IRA rollover?
