Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over about $200k from my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been sitting on that 401k from my previous gig for way too long, just letting it mostly track the general market. My current company's 401k is still chugging along, but I really wanted to get some serious diversification outside of just stocks and bonds, especially with all the talk about inflation and the general unpredictability of, well, everything these days.
I'm an exec in the bourbon industry here in Lexington, so I appreciate things with a solid foundation and a long-term legacy. Gold just feels like that. It’s been a store of wealth for millennia, not some fly-by-night tech stock. The process was smoother than I expected, actually. Found a reputable custodian, they handled the direct rollover, and I went with physical gold coins. There's something comforting about knowing that value is actually there, not just numbers on a screen.
My portfolio is now split, probably about 70/30 traditional holdings to gold. I'm aiming for peace of mind more than trying to hit some massive home run. My financial advisor seemed a bit lukewarm on it initially, but he eventually understood my rationale, especially with my desire for tangible assets. He's more of a traditionalist, but even he couldn't deny the historical role of gold in hedging against economic uncertainty.
Anyone else here made a similar move recently? Anything I should be looking out for now that I'm in? Fees, future rebalancing, anything quirky about distributions down the line that I might be overlooking? Just trying to make sure I've got all my ducks in a row for the long haul. Cheers!
