Okay, so after a ton of research and gnashing teeth about the market, I finally did it. Rolled over about $60k from my old 401k into a Gold IRA. As a nurse, seeing what inflation is doing to my paychecks and savings, it just felt like the right move for some retirement security. I’m based in Seattle, and honestly, the whole process felt a bit overwhelming at first, but I got through it. I stuck mostly with American Gold Eagles, a mix of 1 oz and 1/2 oz coins, since they seemed like the safest bet for a beginner like me.
Now that the initial adrenaline has worn off, I'm starting to wonder about the long game. For those of you who have held gold in your IRAs for a while, what are your biggest lessons learned? I’m talking storage fees, understanding the buy/sell spreads when you eventually need to liquidate, and any hidden pitfalls I might not be thinking about yet. My company provided a pretty clear breakdown, but it's always good to hear from people who've actually been there.
I guess my main question is: What do you wish you knew when you first started your Gold IRA? I’ve been reading a lot about the importance of diversification, and while my gold is a piece of that, I’m curious if anyone here regretted going too heavily into gold coins versus other precious metals approved for IRAs, like silver or platinum. Any advice on keeping an eye on the market without driving myself crazy?
Also, given the current economic climate, what’s your outlook on gold’s performance over the next 5-10 years? I'm hoping this is a solid, long-term play, but sometimes I still get a little nervous about having a decent chunk of my retirement in physical assets. Any reassurance, or even realistic warnings, would be much appreciated!
