Finally got around to rolling over a good portion of my old 401k from my teaching days into a Gold IRA, specifically focusing on gold rounds. After 2008, I swore I'd never put all my eggs in the stock market basket again. Been wanting to do this for years, but life, you know? Between grandkids and enjoying retirement here in Phoenix, it just kept getting pushed back. But better late than never, right?
I ended up moving about $150k into the Gold IRA, with a big chunk of that going into different denominations of gold rounds. I like the idea of having something tangible, and the premiums on rounds felt a bit more reasonable than some of the fancier coins. It’s comforting to know that a good piece of my nest egg is now in something that isn’t directly tied to the whims of the Dow. Anyone else here mostly stacking rounds?
The whole process was actually smoother than I expected. The company I went with really helped with the paperwork and navigating the trustee stuff. My biggest stressor was honestly figuring out the tax implications – I'm a stickler for doing things by the book, especially with retirement funds. I found this online tool, the Tax Calculator on Gold IRA Blueprint, which was super helpful for getting a rough idea of what I was looking at. Made me feel a lot more prepared when I talked to my financial advisor.
Now that it’s done, I feel a huge weight off my shoulders. It's not about trying to get rich quick, it’s about preserving what I worked hard for all those years. With inflation being what it is, and all the uncertainty in the world, having that physical asset just makes me sleep a little better. Anyone else feel this way after diversifying into precious metals? What was your biggest motivation?
