Finally got around to completing the rollover of a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been meaning to do it for ages, especially with all the noise in the markets lately. I'd held a good amount of physical metals for years, but this 401k was just sitting there, exposed to all the usual nonsense. Decided it was time to diversify away from the paper assets and get some more tangible wealth protection.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, though I did do my homework beforehand. Had about $750k in the 401k, and I rolled over a little under half of it into the Gold IRA. I’m pretty heavy into metals already, so this just rounds out the portfolio nicely. Living down here in Palm Beach, you hear a lot of chatter about preserving capital, and for someone like me who’s been retired for a few years after running a company, that’s paramount. I used a custodian that was very helpful, and they walked me through all the paperwork, which honestly wasn't too bad. Took about three weeks from start to finish to see the metals allocated.
Emotionally, it's a huge relief. There’s something inherently reassuring about owning actual gold and silver, especially in an IRA. It feels like a solid foundation, regardless of what the Fed or the politicians decide to do next. It's a different kind of peace of mind than just seeing numbers on a screen. For those of you considering it, I'd highly recommend looking into it. If you're new to the idea, this Gold IRA Quiz is actually a pretty good starting point to understand the basics.
My question for the group now is this: For those of you with significant precious metals allocations, how do you view the optimal percentage of your total portfolio that should be in metals? I'm sitting around 15% now, not including the new IRA funds. Curious to hear other perspectives from those who are serious about wealth preservation.
