Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on rolling a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve been sitting on this decision for a while – probably since late last year – but with all the economic uncertainty and my pension not being quite what it used to be, I figured it was time to diversify my retirement plan. I'm a government employee here in Albuquerque, and while the pension is reliable, it's never going to make me rich, ya know?
The process itself was... let's say, less daunting than I expected, but still a lot of paperwork. I moved about $65k over. I worked with a company that specialized in Gold IRAs, and they actually walked me through most of it. Didn’t feel pressured, which was a big plus. My old 401k administrator was a bit slow on the draw with the transfer, but eventually, the funds landed. I went with a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Gold Buffalos – felt like a good balance for hedging against inflation, which is my main goal here.
Now that it's done, I feel a sense of relief, honestly. Like I've taken a concrete step to protect my retirement savings from all the craziness. It's not my whole portfolio, just a decent supplement to my existing 403b and pension. I'm 52, so still got a few years till I retire, but thinking about the future is non-stop these days.
Anyone else here in a similar boat, or recently done a rollover? What was your experience like? Any surprises? And for those who've had a Gold IRA for a while, any tips or things you wish you knew when you started?
