Holy cow, I just wrapped up rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and I'm honestly still a little stunned by the timeline. I kept reading all these articles online talking about it taking weeks, even a couple of months sometimes, and I was bracing myself for a long haul. Figured with the way things are going with inflation, might as well get some real assets into the mix sooner rather than later, right?
My old 401k had about $380k sitting in it from a company I left about five years ago, just collecting dust in some pretty vanilla mutual funds that weren't really doing it for me anymore. I started the process with my financial advisor here in Salt Lake City about three weeks ago. We decided on a mix of Gold Eagles and some Gold Buffalos for the physical allocation. I was worried there'd be a ton of red tape, but honestly, once my advisor got the ball rolling with the custodian, it felt like things moved at warp speed. They handled most of the paperwork and coordinating with the old 401k provider directly.
From the first phone call with my advisor to seeing the gold actually allocated in my new IRA account, it was just under two and a half weeks. I know some of that depends on the providers involved, but I was seriously impressed. I was expecting to be chasing people down for updates, but it was surprisingly smooth. The funds left my old 401k account pretty quickly, and once they hit the new custodian, the purchase and allocation of the physical gold coins happened within a few days. So, for anyone else out there considering it and worried about the timing, it can be much faster than those "average" estimates often suggest.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with a surprisingly quick rollover? Or did I just get lucky with the providers involved? Always curious to hear other people's real-world timelines.
