Finally got around to rolling over a chunky bit of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the noise lately about inflation and the market feeling a bit… squirrelly. Had about $380k in total that I decided to move. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, honestly. I was bracing myself for a bureaucratic nightmare, but my precious metals dealer was really on top of things, and the custodian handled the transfer pretty efficiently. Took about three weeks from start to finish to see the funds settled and the gold purchased.
My reasoning for going with gold bars was pretty simple – diversification and a hedge against what I see as inevitable economic headwinds. Running a logistics company here in Memphis, I’m constantly looking at supply chains and global economics, and my gut tells me we’re in for a bumpy few years. Wanted a solid, tangible asset outside of the financial system. It’s a significant portion of my retirement savings, but I’ve still got plenty in traditional investments for growth. This is more about capital preservation for me as I start to seriously plan succession for the business in the next 5-7 years.
I did spend a bunch of time playing around with the Gold IRA Calculator on Gold IRA Blueprint before making the jump. It was really helpful for getting a sense of potential returns and how the value might fluctuate over time, especially comparing it against my old 401k performance. Nothing’s guaranteed, of course, but seeing the historical data laid out gave me a lot more confidence in the decision.
Anyone else here recently done a similar rollover? What kind of experience did you have? Any unexpected hurdles or pleasant surprises? Always curious to hear other people’s perspectives on this.
