Finally pulled the trigger and got my old 401k rolled over into a Gold IRA. I've been eyeing this for a while, especially after seeing how wild the market's been the last couple of years. My old 401k was sitting at about $380k, mostly in tech stocks and some bond funds that just weren't cutting it anymore. Seeing those numbers jump around so much gave me serious heartburn. As someone who used to stare at spreadsheets all day as a bank manager, the volatility was just getting too much to stomach.
The process itself was surprisingly smooth. I worked with a company based out of Salt Lake City, and they really walked me through every step. I was pretty meticulous about checking their fees and storage options since I'm based here in Portland and wanted to make sure everything was above board. We decided on American Eagles and some Canadian Maples for the physical metals. It took about three weeks from the initial paperwork to confirmation that the metals were securely stored. Honestly, the biggest hurdle was just getting my old 401k administrator to actually release the funds in a timely manner. Had to make a few calls there.
I feel a significant weight lifted, knowing a substantial portion of my retirement savings is now in something tangible. Iβm a big believer in metal diversification, especially with all the talk about inflation and economic uncertainty. It's not about getting rich overnight, but more about preserving purchasing power long-term. Plus, there's just something inherently comforting about holding a physical asset.
Anyone else here made a similar move? What were your considerations, and how are you feeling about your decision now? Curious to hear other folks' experiences and insights, especially from those who've been in the Gold IRA game for a while.
