Thinking about my Gold IRA again, specifically the storage fees. I've got a decent chunk in there now, just under $700k in various coins – mostly Eagles and Maples, with a good bit of pre-33 stuff I picked up for historical value. Been building this out since 2015, felt like a smart move then, and I still do, especially with all the noise out of Beijing and the South China Sea. My current custodian is charging me a flat fee of $350 a year for segregated storage. That's it. No percentages, no tiers based on value. Just $350, whether I had $100k or the almost-$700k I have now. I remember when I first set this up, my broker walked me through it, and it seemed reasonable enough. For segregated storage, I expected to pay more, but this flat fee always struck me as... simple. I opted for segregated because, frankly, when the chips are down, I want my specific coins there, not just a promise of generic bullion.

I've seen some friends talking about their accounts, and some of them are paying a percentage of their assets under management for storage, sometimes as high as 0.25% or 0.5%. If I were paying 0.25% on my current balance, that would be roughly $1,750 a year! So, the $350 flat fee sounds like a steal in comparison. Am I just lucky, or is this more common than I realize for segregated storage in a Gold IRA? I know the market rates can shift, but this custodian hasn't changed it since I started.

Part of me wonders if I'm missing something. Is there a catch with such a low flat fee for segregated storage with a high-value account? Or did I just lock in a sweet deal years ago? Just trying to get a feel for what others are experiencing out there. What are your annual storage fees like, especially for segregated accounts?

Hmm, $700k and segregated storage. Most places I've looked at for segregated storage, especially for that kind of value, tend to go for a flat annual fee rather than a percentage. A percentage fee for segregated storage can sometimes feel like you're paying more as your gold appreciates, which seems a bit counter-intuitive for the "buy and hold" crowd. Have you gotten any quotes from other depositories that offer segregated options? Just curious if you're seeing a similar pricing model elsewhere.

Yeah, that sounds pretty standard for segregated storage, especially with that kind of value. I had a similar experience when I moved some of my precious metals. My fees were a percentage too, and it definitely felt a bit steep at first glance. But once I factored in the peace of mind of *knowing* my specific coins were tucked away securely, it made more sense to me.

Interesting. You mentioned "under $700k in various coins." Are the storage fees based on a percentage of that $700k, or is it a flat fee structure regardless of the value? Just curious how that plays out with segregated storage.

Hey, that's a solid portfolio you've built up! For segregated storage, you definitely want to ensure you're getting what you pay for. A helpful resource I stumbled upon when researching my own options was this detailed breakdown of different storage options and their typical fee structures: www.goldiraguide.com/gold-ira-storage-options/. It might give you a good benchmark to compare your current fees against and see if they align with industry norms for segregated storage. Good luck!
