Okay, so I just finished the process of rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a new Gold IRA, and honestly, it felt like a bigger deal than it probably was. I’m a teacher here in Columbus, and for years I just let my 401k sit there, not really paying much attention. But with all the economic uncertainty lately, I started looking into ways to diversify, and gold kept coming up. I decided to move about $15,000 of my total 401k (which was around $40k) into physical gold.
The company I went with had good reviews, and the whole process took maybe three weeks from first contact to actually seeing the gold allocated – or at least, getting the confirmation it was. I opted for Gold American Eagles, mostly because they seemed like a solid, recognizable option, and I liked the idea of holding something with actual historical value. The fees felt a little steep, especially the initial setup, but I’m hoping it’s a long-term play that pays off. My main concern right now is just understanding the ongoing storage fees and making sure I'm not missing any hidden costs.
Has anyone else here done a similar rollover from a 401k into gold coins? What was your experience like? Did you feel the fees were justified in the long run? I'm still feeling a bit like a newbie in all this, and while I'm excited to have taken this step, there's definitely that underlying "am I doing this right?" feeling. Any insights from more experienced folks would be super helpful!
