Just closed out my inherited IRA and rolled a good chunk of it into a Gold IRA. Thought I'd share my experience and see if anyone else has gone through this, especially with the current market volatility.
My uncle passed late last year and left me a pretty substantial IRA, about $1.2M. He was always a fan of diversified assets, and honestly, so am I. With my real estate developments here in Aspen, I've got plenty of exposure to that sector, but I've always liked having some physical metals in the safe as well. This inherited IRA felt like a good opportunity to rebalance a bit more into something tangible, especially since I already have a significant position in some copper and nickel mining stocks. After talking to my financial advisor, we decided to allocate about 40% of that inherited IRA ($480k) into a Gold IRA. I was primarily looking at American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs, leaning heavily towards the Eagles for now. The process itself was pretty straightforward, surprisingly. The rollover took about three weeks from first call to confirmation of purchase, and the company I went with was pretty transparent about all the fees involved, which was a relief. Storage is vault-based, obviously, in Delaware.
My rationale for this move is pretty simple: inflation hedge, geopolitical instability, and a general distrust of how the Fed is handling things right now. I don't need this chunk of change for immediate liquidity, and I'm comfortable with the long-term play. It's a small but significant piece of my overall $5M+ portfolio, and it feels like a prudent move. Plus, it just feels right to hold a hard asset, especially coming from an uncle who lived through some wild economic times.
Anyone else here go through an inherited IRA to gold conversion recently? What were your thoughts on the process, and what kind of allocations did you make? Curious to hear if others are seeing similar value in this strategy. Or am I just getting too much altitude sickness up here?
