Just wanted to share my recent experience and get some thoughts from other folks here. My aunt passed away last year and left me a decent chunk of her traditional IRA – around $250k. As a doctor here in Boston, my own portfolio is already pretty diversified (stocks, bonds, some real estate), and I already have a significant portion in physical gold and silver, which I've been comfortable with for a while. Given the current economic climate, I immediately started looking into converting a good portion of this inherited IRA into a Gold IRA. I’m thinking around $100k-$150k of it, which would put my total gold exposure right where I feel comfortable.
The process itself has been a bit of a mixed bag. The rollover itself was straightforward enough, but navigating the different custodian options for an inherited IRA, specifically with a precious metals focus, definitely took some legwork. I’ve been talking to Augusta Precious Metals and Noble Gold, and they both seem reputable, but the fees are obviously a big consideration. I'm used to managing my finances, but this inherited IRA with the RMD rules adds another layer of complexity that I'm trying to get my head around.
My main concerns are around the RMDs (Required Minimum Distributions) and how selling a portion of the physical gold for those distributions will work practically. Has anyone here had to sell off gold from an inherited Gold IRA for RMDs? What was your experience like? Did you find it straightforward with your custodian, or were there unexpected hurdles? Also, with the current gold prices, part of me wonders if I should wait a bit longer to convert more, but with the market volatility, it feels like I could be chasing my tail. Any insights or advice from those who have been through this would be greatly appreciated!
