So, my aunt passed away last year and left me her IRA. It was a bit of a mixed bag; some stocks, some bonds, nothing too exciting. I’m a marketing exec here in Minneapolis, and I've been eyeing early retirement, probably in the next 10-12 years if all goes well. My personal portfolio, not including this inherited one, is sitting around the $200k mark right now, and I’ve been pretty aggressive with it. But with the inherited IRA, I was looking for something a bit more stable, something that felt like a true long-term hedge against inflation and market jitters. That's when I started seriously looking at a Gold IRA rollover.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I worked with a firm that specialized in these things, and they walked me through all the paperwork. The biggest hurdle was honestly just understanding all the IRS rules about inherited IRAs versus a traditional rollover. Had a few lengthy calls with my financial advisor on that. Once that was sorted, liquidating the existing assets and moving the funds into a new custodian set up for physical gold storage took about three weeks from start to finish. I ended up allocating about $75k of the inherited IRA into various gold bullion coins and bars. It felt like a significant chunk, but the peace of mind knowing a portion of my retirement funds are anchored in something tangible is pretty comforting.
My main reason for going this route was genuinely for diversification and a hedge. With all the talk about potential recession, inflation, and general market volatility, it just made sense to have some exposure to a historically resilient asset. I’m thinking long-term here, not trying to make a quick buck. This $75k isn't something I plan on touching for a long, long time. I know some people are skeptical of gold, but for my personal situation and goals, it felt like the right move, especially with funds I wasn’t actively investing or day trading with.
Has anyone else here done something similar with an inherited IRA? What were your motivations? And for those of you who have held gold in your IRA for a while, what are your thoughts on its performance over the long haul? Any regrets? I'm always curious to hear other perspectives on this, especially from real people, not just financial pundits.
