Inherited IRA to Gold - What's the Catch?
- •My wife's aunt passed away last year and left her a decent chunk of change in an inherited IRA.
- •We're talking somewhere in the neighborhood of $280k.
- •Spent 30 years in dairy, saw enough ups and downs to know a good hedge when I see one.
My wife's aunt passed away last year and left her a decent chunk of change in an inherited IRA. We're talking somewhere in the neighborhood of $280k. Now, I've been a gold bug for a while, ever since I started seeing the writing on the wall with inflation and just the general instability of the stock market. Spent 30 years in dairy, saw enough ups and downs to know a good hedge when I see one. So, naturally, my first thought was "can we get some of this into physical gold?"
I've been looking into rolling it over, or converting it into a Gold IRA. We're based here in Madison, and honestly, finding straight answers has been a bit of a maze. Most of the information online feels like it's trying to sell you something rather than just lay out the facts. I'm not looking for a sales pitch, just trying to understand the logistics and potential pitfalls.
My own Gold IRA is through Augusta Precious Metals, and it's been rock solid for my needs – about 15% of my overall portfolio is there, close to $120k at this point. I've been pretty happy with their process. But an inherited IRA feels like it might have different rules. Are there any specific tax implications we need to be aware of if we convert this inherited IRA to physical gold? Is it better to just take the distributions and then buy gold separately, even with the tax hit? I’m trying to avoid any nasty surprises down the line.
I've heard some talk about different types of inherited IRAs and how conversion rules can vary. Is it better to do a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer, or does it even matter for an inherited account? Any wisdom from folks who've navigated this specific scenario would be hugely appreciated. Trying to make sure we do right by her aunt's legacy, and protect this for our future.
