Thought I’d share my recent experience with converting an inherited IRA to physical gold, for anyone else considering it. My folks always told me to be practical with wealth, not just let it sit there and hope for the best. When my dad passed on last year, I inherited his IRA, which was sitting at around $220k. It was mostly in a mix of stocks and bonds, pretty standard stuff. After watching the market volatility and hearing all the talk about inflation, I just felt a strong urge to get some of that into something more tangible. Horses are real, dirt is real, gold feels real, you know?
I spent a good month or so researching Gold IRAs and the different companies out there. Called a few, got some calls back. A lot of pushy sales tactics, which I really don't appreciate. I decided on a company called Augusta Precious Metals – they weren't perfect, but they seemed the most straightforward. The process itself for the conversion wasn't too bad. They handled the rollover from the inherited IRA custodian, and then I picked out the specific coins. I went with a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples. Didn't want to put all my eggs in one basket, so to speak, even within gold.
The whole thing from my initial call to the gold actually being in the Delaware Depository (I chose them for storage, seemed reputable enough) took about 4-5 weeks. The biggest chunk of that was honestly just the paperwork and waiting for funds to clear between institutions. It wasn't cheap; there were some fees involved with the transfer and then obviously the markup on the gold itself. But for the peace of mind, for me, it was worth it. Living on a horse farm outside Louisville, you learn to value stability. This feels like stability.
Now, I’m curious to hear from others. Has anyone else converted an inherited IRA to gold? What was your experience like? Any big regrets or things you wish you’d done differently? Also, any long-term holders out there, how has your gold IRA performed for you over the years? Looking to gain some perspective as this is a new venture for me personally.
