Man, these inflation numbers lately are giving me serious flashbacks to the late 70s and early 80s. I know it’s not quite as bad, but the feeling in my gut is the same. I retired from ExxonMobil almost a decade ago, and I rode out a few major ups and downs in the market during my career. But this current economic climate, with food prices through the roof and gas still flirting with $4 here in Houston, just feels... different. It makes me question if the Fed even has a handle on it anymore, or if they’re just kicking the can down the road.
Lately, I’ve been really glad I went heavy into a Gold IRA when I did. I started building up my precious metals holdings back in 2015, and slowly but surely, that part of my portfolio has become a significant chunk – probably close to 20% of my total 4 million net worth now. When I first started, it was more about diversification and a hedge against stock market volatility. Now, with all this talk about currency debasement and endless government spending, it feels like it’s becoming my primary inflation shield. I remember my dad always told me, "Son, gold holds its value when everything else goes to pot," and I'm really seeing that wisdom play out.
What are others thinking? Are you seeing this current inflationary cycle as a blip, or do you think we're in for a longer haul and it's time to seriously consider adding more physical assets? I’m due for my annual portfolio review next month, and I'm genuinely considering rebalancing even further into gold, maybe even going for a larger allocation than I initially planned. It feels counter-intuitive to pull money out of dividend stocks that are still performing, but the long-term security of physical gold is weighing heavy on my mind right now. Any other retirees out there seeing things similarly?
