Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on converting a chunck of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve been researching this for ages – probably since the pandemic really highlighted how volatile the market can be. My financial advisor (who, bless her heart, was a little hesitant but ultimately supported my decision) helped me get the ball rolling, and I initiated the direct rollover last week. We're looking at moving about $150k over, mostly into various gold and silver bullion options.
I mostly did this as a hedge against inflation and general market craziness. I'm a marketing exec here in Minneapolis, mid-40s, and trying to retire a bit earlier than most, so I'm trying to diversify outside of just stocks and bonds. I understand these things take time, but my 401k provider (a pretty big, well-known one) has been... sluggish, to say the least. The Gold IRA custodian has been great so far, really responsive, but it seems like we're just waiting on the funds to clear the original 401k account.
My question for those who've done this before: What was your experience with the timeline for a direct 401k to Gold IRA rollover? Are we talking a couple of weeks, a month, longer? I’m feeling a bit antsy having that much capital in limbo, even if it’s technically in transit. Any common holdups I should be aware of? And how quickly after the funds landed were you able to actually pick out your precious metals and have them securely stored?
