How long did your 401k to Gold IRA transfer actually take?

    Key Takeaways
    • You know, something tangible.
    • We've got just under $75k in an old 401k from my previous job that we're looking to roll into a Gold IRA.
    • Some say 2-3 weeks, others are vague and say "a month or so." I'm just wondering what people's real-world experiences have been.

Okay, so I'm a farmer's wife here in Kansas City, and my husband and I have been talking for ages about getting some of our retirement savings out of the stock market. You know, something tangible. We've got just under $75k in an old 401k from my previous job that we're looking to roll into a Gold IRA. We're thinking primarily gold, maybe a little silver too, since I just feel a lot better about holding something real, especially with all the talk about inflation these days. My dad always said, "paper money is just that – paper."

We've talked to a couple of companies and they all give us these estimates for how long the whole 401k to Gold IRA transfer will take. Some say 2-3 weeks, others are vague and say "a month or so." I'm just wondering what people's real-world experiences have been. Did it actually stick to their timelines?

I'm trying to figure out if it's going to be a quick process or if I should prepare myself for it to drag on for a while. We're not in a huge hurry, but I'd like to have a realistic expectation. For folks who have done a direct rollover from an old 401k to a Gold IRA (or even a Silver IRA), how long did it actually take from start to finish? Was there anything that really sped it up or, more likely, slowed it down?

Any insights from those of you who've been through this would be super helpful. Just want to make sure I'm not caught off guard!

This mirrors what I've been seeing too. The macro environment right now is making a strong case for physical metals.

Hey there! Just wanted to offer a slightly different take. While getting things transferred quickly is definitely ideal, I'd also recommend focusing heavily on the fees involved with the Gold IRA itself. Sometimes, a super fast transfer can come with higher custodian or storage fees down the line. Make sure you're comparing the full cost picture, not just the transfer speed. Good luck to you and your husband!

Hey there! My husband and I went through a very similar process last year with his old 401k. We were pretty anxious about the timing too, especially with the market being so volatile. From the initial paperwork to seeing the gold actually in the vault (we opted for segregated storage), it took us a little over three weeks. The transfer itself was quick, but the logistics of the storage facility and getting everything signed off added a bit of time. Good luck with yours!

Hey, that's a great question, and good on you for looking into tangible assets! I'm curious, did you guys look into a direct rollover or an indirect one for that 401k? I've heard the indirect ones can sometimes add a bit of a delay.

Genuinely curious — has anyone here actually tried to liquidate from their gold IRA? How smooth was that process?

Been looking into this myself — the fees on some of these custodians are wild. Anyone found one that doesn't gouge you?
