Okay, so I just opened my first Gold IRA, pretty excited about it! I’m a teacher here in Columbus, and finally got my initial investment into actual physical gold. It's not a huge amount yet, just under $10,000 to start, but it feels like a big step towards diversifying my retirement. The whole process was a bit more involved than I expected, but I’m glad I did it. Now I'm staring down the barrel of figuring out where this gold actually lives.
My custodian is pushing pretty hard for a third-party depository, which makes sense from a compliance standpoint for an IRA. But I'm seeing some stuff online about "home storage" Gold IRAs, and it's making me wonder. I mean, the idea of having my physical gold somewhere secure but accessible in my own home is really appealing. For someone like me who’s just starting out and only has that sub-$10k amount, does a home storage option ever really make sense, or is it just asking for trouble?
I guess I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons. A depository seems super secure, insured, and no headaches about audits or anything. But there are fees, and it feels a bit... remote. Home storage feels more direct, but then I'm thinking about safes, insurance, potential security risks – it just sounds like a lot of personal responsibility I might not be fully equipped for yet. Has anyone gone the home storage route, especially with a smaller portfolio? What are the practicalities and the actual risks involved?
Also, completely unrelated but while I'm thinking about IRAs and the future, has anyone used that RMD Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint? I'm nowhere near RMD age, but I'm trying to get a handle on what those required minimum distributions will look like way down the line. It's one of those things I know I'll have to deal with eventually, and trying to plan ahead a bit.
