Got my wife on board with a Gold IRA (finally!) – her new obsession with Gold Eagles
- •Took me long enough, but I finally convinced my wife that a Gold IRA was the right move for some of our portfolio.
- •We’re both pretty diversified, obviously, but she’s always been more old-school with her risk assessment – mostly staying liquid or in blue chips.

Took me long enough, but I finally convinced my wife that a Gold IRA was the right move for some of our portfolio. We’re both pretty diversified, obviously, but she’s always been more old-school with her risk assessment – mostly staying liquid or in blue chips. I’ve had my personal allocation to physical gold for a few years now, maybe 5-7% of my own net worth, just as a hedge against… well, everything. But getting her to agree to moving a portion of our joint retirement assets into something other than mutual funds or bonds felt like pulling teeth.
What finally clicked? Honestly, it wasn't my usual macroeconomic arguments or even the historical performance charts I kept showing her. It was the physical aspect of it. We were at a friend's place in Darien a few weekends ago, and he had a couple of those American Gold Eagles out – just gorgeous coins. He was talking about how he feels a lot more secure knowing he has a tangible asset, even if it's held by a custodian, especially with all the speculation flying around the market these days. She picked one up, felt the weight, and I swear I saw a lightbulb go off. Something about the tactile nature of it, the history, the true intrinsic value hit different than just looking at P&L statements. We’re talking about moving maybe $500k from an old 401k rollover into a self-directed Gold IRA. It’s not a huge chunk of our total, but it’s a significant move for her comfort level, which is huge.
Now she's completely obsessed with learning about different types of gold coins – she's already asked me about Krugerrands and Canadian Maples. I even sent her the Gold IRA Quiz I found online a while back just to help her understand the mechanics and tax implications better. Had to laugh when she came back saying "So, if we hold these long enough, we don't pay capital gains until distribution?!" Bless her heart, she's learning fast. It’s actually pretty endearing to see her get so into it. Anyone else find their spouse suddenly more interested once they saw actual physical gold, rather than just abstract numbers?
Feels good to have that extra layer of protection, especially for our longer-term retirement horizon. And honestly, it’s nice to have her on board with something I’ve believed in for a while. It's a small win, but a meaningful one.
