Got my 401k into gold last year, best decision I ever made
- β’I was in the same boat about a year and a half ago.
- β’Been in the oil game for 25 years, seen enough ups and downs to know you gotta hedge your bets.
- β’My 401k had a solid chunk in it, nearly $800k, mostly in S&P 500 funds and some tech.
Reading a lot of posts lately about folks looking to diversify out of traditional markets, especially with all the talk about inflation and instability. I was in the same boat about a year and a half ago. Been in the oil game for 25 years, seen enough ups and downs to know you gotta hedge your bets. My 401k had a solid chunk in it, nearly $800k, mostly in S&P 500 funds and some tech. It was doing 'fine,' but that gnawing feeling something was off just wouldn't quit.
Iβve been investing in physical gold on the side for about 15 years, mostly coins β Eagles, Maples, Krugerrands. I like having something tangible. So, decided to roll over a significant portion of my 401k into a Gold IRA. Didn't move the whole thing, just about $250k into physical gold coins. The process was a bit more involved than just clicking a button, but it was nowhere near as complicated as I expected. Found a solid custodian, did all the paperwork, and within a few weeks, those coins were sitting in a secure vault. The peace of mind alone was worth it.
Now, Iβm not saying everyone should yank everything out of their 401k and dump it into gold. Diversification is key. But for me, living here in Dallas, seeing how much energy markets can swing, having that quarter-million tied up in something that historically holds its value when everything else is going haywire feels right. And honestly, seeing the value of that gold steadily climb while some of my other investments are bouncing around has been a huge stress reducer.
Anyone else here made a similar move with their 401k or other retirement accounts into gold coins? What were your biggest concerns initially, and how did they pan out? I used a pretty neat Retirement Planner tool online when I was figuring out the percentages and it was a massive help for visualizing different scenarios. Curious if others have found similar tools useful or just gone with their gut.
