I've been thinking a lot recently about the ideal gold vs. silver split in my metals portfolio. My current allocation is probably 80/20 gold to silver, with a significant chunk of that silver being older junk silver I picked up over the years. We're talking several hundred ounces, mostly collected when I was first getting into metals back in the early 2000s when silver was still dirt cheap. Gold makes up the majority of the value, obviously, with a mix of Eagles, Canadian Maples, and some pre-33 I've been slowly accumulating. Total holdings are well into seven figures by now.

My core rationale for the heavy gold weighting has always been value density and ease of storage. Living in Aspen, space is premium even for a place like mine, and moving around significant weight in silver is just a pain in the ass. Gold is just so much more practical for the kind of liquidity and wealth preservation I'm looking for. But lately, with the gold/silver ratio hovering where it is, I'm wondering if I'm missing out on a serious silver play. I look at that ratio and it just screams "silver is undervalued."

I build and develop properties, so I'm used to trying to identify undervalued assets and riding that wave. Is silver that undervalued asset right now? I wouldn't mind pushing that 20% silver up to 30% or even 40% if the upside is truly there. But then I come back to the practicalities. Storing another several hundred thousand dollars worth of silver takes up a lot more room than the equivalent in gold. I'm already looking at potentially expanding my secure storage. What are your thoughts on this? Am I overthinking the storage aspect and underestimating silver's potential jump?

For those of you with substantial metals holdings (let's say 500k+), what's your current gold/silver allocation? And more importantly, what’s your reasoning behind it? Are you actively looking to rebalance given the current market conditions, or are you holding tight to your existing allocations? Just looking for some smart perspectives here – always good to hear how other serious investors are thinking about it.

Glad I'm not the only one wrestling with this! I'm in a pretty similar boat, actually. My allocation is probably closer to 70/30, and like you, a good chunk of my silver is also old junk silver I've accumulated. It's tough to decide whether to try and even things out more or just stick with what I've got.

Hey, that's a pretty interesting split, especially with the junk silver. I'm curious – when you say "older junk silver," are you talking pre-64 dimes, quarters, halvs, or is there a specific type you've focused on?

Interesting split! I'm actually leaning the other way a bit, at least when it comes to new purchases. While gold is the classic, rock-solid hedge, I've been eyeing silver as having more upside potential in a truly inflationary environment or supply crunch. I mean, it's an industrial metal too, not just a monetary one. That 80/20 might make sense for stability, but for growth?

Plus, that junk silver is pretty cool. Value beyond just melt, sometimes. I'd almost consider that a separate bucket, personally. Good stuff!

Hey, that's a great question and something a lot of us wrestle with! Given you're already sitting on a good amount of silver, have you looked into the historical gold-to-silver ratio? It can be a pretty interesting tool to gauge when one might be undervalued relative to the other. There are tons of charts out there tracking it, but here's a decent one from GoldandSilver.com that gives a good overview. Might help you calibrate that 80/20 split a bit more!
