Alright, so I’ve been thinking a lot about my precious metals allocation lately, and specifically where silver fits into the picture. My portfolio is sitting comfortably around the $400k mark right now, mostly in my Gold IRA. I’ve always been a gold guy, makes sense with my background in steel – commodities just speak to me. For the last 15 years, during my time at U.S. Steel and even after, gold’s been my go-to for wealth preservation.
I’m down here in Birmingham, and honestly, most folks I talk to are all about gold. But I’ve been watching silver’s performance, especially over the last few years, and it’s been intriguing. I currently hold about 90% gold to 10% silver, mostly in 10oz and 100oz bars in the silver portion. I like the industrial demand argument for silver, plus of course, it's still a monetary metal. But the volatility on the silver side always gives me a little pause.
For those of you with significant precious metals holdings, what's your philosophical split? Do you lean heavy into gold for stability and then sprinkle in silver for potential upside? Or do you see silver as more of a primary inflation hedge, maybe even outperforming gold in certain economic climates? I’m comfortable with my gold position, but part of me wonders if I’m missing out by not diversifying more into silver.
My accountant keeps nudging me to stay put, but my gut is telling me to dig a bit deeper here. Thinking about maybe bumping my silver allocation to 20-25% over the next year or two, especially if we see a dip. What’s been your experience with managing the gold-to-silver ratio in your own portfolio? Any seasoned investors here with a perspective from a similar background or portfolio size?
