I've been thinking a lot about the self-directed IRA setup I switched to about five years back, specifically for my gold rounds. Grew my tourism business here in Savannah from the ground up, so I've seen my fair share of economic tides come and go. When I first dipped my toes into the Gold IRA waters, I went with a pretty standard custodian, just like most of the financial advisors pushed. Had a decent chunk, maybe 100k at the time, all in some generic gold bars they picked for me.
The problem was, I felt completely disconnected from my investment. My business thrives on being hands-on, making my own decisions, and that wasn't happening with my IRA. Always felt like I was at the mercy of their choices, their storage fees, their limited options. So, after a couple of years feeling that itch, I moved everything over to a self-directed IRA and started picking out my own gold rounds. It was a bit of a headache with the paperwork initially, but being able to choose specific mints and denominations, and just generally feeling more in control, has been a game-changer.
Currently, I'm sitting on around 200k in gold rounds, mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, all securely stored in a vault I personally vetted. The thought of having to liquidate through my old custodian now, especially with the way the market's been acting, honestly still gives me a bit of anxiety. With the self-directed, I feel like I've got a clearer path. Is anyone else here running a self-directed IRA for their precious metal rounds? What were your biggest motivators for making the switch from a traditional custodian?
I’m particularly interested in hearing about any unexpected benefits or challenges you faced. Did anyone find the storage options more flexible or less expensive on their own? Or maybe even discovered some hidden fees with their old custodian they weren't aware of until they started looking closer? Just trying to get a feel if my experience tracks with others.
