Okay, so I’m finally pulling the trigger on rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and the way the market's been acting. I've got a significant chunk of change in there from an old job – almost $2.5MM – and I'd rather have some of that safely tucked away in actual physical assets, especially with my other heavy metal holdings. I’m thinking about moving about $750k of it over.

I’ve done my homework on the providers and I'm leaning towards Augusta Precious Metals or American Hartford Gold. Both seem to have solid reputations, and I appreciate the white-glove service when you're dealing with numbers like these. What I'm really trying to nail down is the realistic timeline. I've heard everything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. My current 401k is with Fidelity, and bless their hearts, they're not always the speediest when it comes to outbound transfers, especially for larger amounts.

Anyone here gone through a direct rollover from a 401k to a Gold IRA recently? What was your experience with the timeline for funds actually hitting your new IRA custodian? And then from there, how long did it take for the precious metals to get purchased and delivered to the depository? I’m looking at getting some American Gold Eagles and maybe a few Gold Buffalos. I’m out in Aspen, so I’ll probably use Delaware Depository or something similar on the East Coast for storage.

Just trying to set accurate expectations for when I can consider those funds truly diversified away from the paper assets. My real estate portfolio is doing great, but I definitely want this piece of mind locked in before the next major market wobble. Any insights or war stories would be much appreciated!

For me, the direct trustee-to-trustee transfer from my old Roth 401k to a new Gold IRA custodian took about three weeks start to finish back in March. The biggest hold-up was getting the signed paperwork back and forth. Definitely follow up with both custodians weekly until it's done.

Hey, I just went through this exact thing a few months ago, though with a much smaller amount. Still, the timeline was pretty similar to what I've heard others report. My indirect rollover (from a traditional IRA) took about 3 weeks from start to finish. The direct transfer option was even quicker, by a few days. The biggest holdup for me was actually my old custodian taking their sweet time processing the disbursement request. Definitely follow up with them if things feel like they're dragging!

Hey, that's a pretty chunky rollover! Good luck with it. I'm curious, since you mentioned inflation and market volatility, did you look into any other alternative assets for that kind of transfer, or was gold always your primary focus?

Hey, cool you're making the move! Just a thought, though – with $2.5M, are you sure a Gold IRA is the *only* play? While gold can be great for inflation hedging, it's not exactly known for aggressive growth. Diversification is key, especially with a sum that large. Have you looked into other inflation-resistant assets too, or perhaps keeping a portion in traditional investments while still getting some gold exposure?

Good thread, everyone. I just completed my transfer from an old 401k to a Gold IRA last month, and the whole process took about 3 weeks from initiating the paperwork to seeing the metals secured. I used the Tax Calculator at https://tax.goldirablueprint.com/?forum to confirm my tax implications beforehand, and it showed me exactly how much I could save on taxes after moving my metals to my El Paso vault. My question is, for those who did a direct rollover, did anyone experience any unexpected fees from their previous custodian that weren't clearly disclosed upfront? I had a small one pop up that wasn't on the initial fee schedule.

Okay, so my experience with this wasn't exactly smooth, but it worked out eventually. I initiated a direct transfer from an old 401k to my Gold IRA back in late November, right before Thanksgiving. My previous custodian (a big name, but totally incompetent) dragged their feet for almost three weeks just on the paperwork before even acknowledging the request. The Gold IRA company here in Louisville (let's just say they're not one of the *super* big national ones, but have a real good reputation locally) was on top of it, but their hands were tied. It finally cleared and the metals were in my vault by the second week of January. So yeah, about 6-7 weeks total, mostly due to the old custodian. Definitely light a fire under your old custodian if they're not moving.
