Gold IRA transfer timeline - Anyone else seeing delays?

    Key Takeaways

    The 3-step rollover process explained

Hey all, hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here. I initiated a 401k to Gold IRA rollover about three weeks ago, and I'm starting to get a little antsy about the timeline. My Roth 401k is with Fidelity, and I’m transferring it to Augusta Precious Metals. I'm moving about $150k of my portfolio into physical gold and silver, and the idea was to get this done well before the end of the year to lock in some prices and seriously diversify before the election craziness really ramps up. Planning to retire in the next 5-7 years, probably down to Florida, and I'm really trying to get all my ducks in a row.

I feel like the whole process has been moving at a snail's pace, especially on the Fidelity side. Augusta has been pretty responsive, walking me through the paperwork and giving me the rundown on the metals. But every time I check in with Fidelity, it's "it's in process" or "we're reviewing the necessary documentation." My transfer agent at Augusta said it typically takes 2-4 weeks, but we're hitting the upper end of that already, and I haven't even gotten to the actual metal selection and shipping part yet. Is this normal? Am I just being impatient?

For those of you who have done similar rollovers, especially from a 401k/Roth 401k, what were your timelines like? Did you experience any hold-ups with your previous custodian? Any tips or tricks to speed things up? I'm in Minneapolis, so maybe there's some local insight, but I assume the big firms operate pretty uniformly nationwide. Just feeling a bit frustrated and wondering if this is a common experience or if I should be pushing harder.

Hey, just curious! You mentioned moving your Roth 401k. Are you doing a direct rollover of the Roth portion, or are you actually converting any pre-tax 401k funds into a Roth Gold IRA? That could potentially affect the timeline too.

Hey, I hear you on this! Had a very similar situation last year when I moved my old 401k from Vanguard over to a Gold IRA with Lear Capital. Took way longer than I expected, probably closer to 5 weeks from start to finish. I was getting pretty antsy too, especially with the market being so volatile at the time. Keep bugging both ends, that's what eventually seemed to shake loose the paperwork for me.

Honestly, three weeks for a rollover of that size, especially with a Roth 401k and involving physical metals, doesn't sound *that* delayed to me. I've heard stories of it taking longer, especially if there's any back-and-forthNeeded documents, or even just high volume on the part of the custodian. Augusta is usually pretty on the ball, but Fidelity can sometimes be the bottleneck. Keep pestering both sides, but I wouldn't panic just yet.

Hey, totally feel you on the anxiety about timelines. It's rough when you're waiting on a big chunk of your retirement!

One thing that can sometimes speed things up (or at least give you peace of mind) is to follow up directly with your old 401k provider (Fidelity, in your case) even after initiating with Augusta. They often have specific forms or procedures that need to be followed on their end, and a gentle nudge can sometimes get things moving. Good luck!
