Home Storage vs. Depository for Gold IRA - What's the consensus?

I've been wrestling with this decision for my Gold IRA and could really use some input from folks who've been through it or have strong opinions. I'm a uni professor here in Richmond, so my research brain tends to go a little overboard, but the more I dig, the more conflicting info I find on home storage versus a traditional depository for physical gold held in an IRA.
Currently, my Gold IRA is sitting around the $350k mark, and it's mostly in physical gold and some silver, all held at a pretty standard, insured depository. My initial thought process, supported by my advisor, was that it's the safest and most compliant way to go. But lately, I’ve been reading more about home storage options – usually some sort of LLC structure – and the allure of having direct physical access to my assets is pretty strong. The idea of being able to touch and see my investment, especially in uncertain times, speaks to a more primitive part of my brain, I guess. I'm also thinking about the logistics and potential costs over the long term for depository fees, which, while not astronomical, do add up.
My concern with home storage, even with a properly structured LLC, is obviously the IRS compliance. I've read about the "disqualified person" rules and the need for very strict separation. Some articles I've read make it sound straightforward with the right legal setup, while others scream "IRS audit nightmare!" I'm trying to weigh the peace of mind of direct access against the potential for significant legal headaches down the line. I'm a big believer in hedging against systemic risk, and having my gold outside the traditional financial system entirely has a certain appeal, but not at the expense of my retirement savings being deemed a taxable distribution.
Has anyone here successfully navigated the home storage route for a Gold IRA of this size? What were the biggest hurdles? Or, for those who exclusively use depositories, what's your reasoning for sticking with it, and do you ever feel a pull towards direct possession? I'm trying to make a well-informed decision for a significant portion of my retirement, and external perspectives are incredibly valuable. Thanks in advance!
