I've been kicking myself a bit lately about my Gold IRA setup, and I wanted to see what other folks here are doing, especially with gold rounds. I pulled the trigger on a Gold IRA about two years ago, right when things started feeling a little shaky economically. As a jewelry store owner here in Providence, I honestly thought I knew it all when it came to precious metals. I've been handling gold, silver, and platinum for decades, buying and selling, so the idea of a Gold IRA felt like a natural extension of my business investments.
My initial thought was home storage, hands down. I mean, I have substantial safes at the store and at home, and I've always felt more comfortable having my assets physically with me. Plus, as a small business owner, every penny counts, and I was looking at the depository fees and thinking, "Why pay someone else to hold what I can hold myself?" So, I went with an IRA custodian that offered home storage as an option for my ~75k portfolio invested mostly in 1oz gold rounds. Now, don't get me wrong, it's pretty reassuring to know that gold is in my vault right now, a palpable asset during all this market volatility.
However, the more I dig into the nuances, the more I wonder if I made the right call. The tax implications and the strict rules about self-dealing for IRAs are a constant low hum of anxiety in the back of my mind. Even though I'm fully compliant and my gold is stored separately, there's always that nagging worry about accidentally crossing a line. And if something did happen – God forbid a fire or a sophisticated theft that even my safes couldn't ward off – the insurance limits would barely cover a fraction of that investment, even as precious metals, you know?
So, here's my question to the community: For those of you with Gold IRAs, especially around the same portfolio size, did you go with home storage or a depository? And if you chose a depository, what were the deciding factors? Any specific depositories you'd recommend or warn against? I'm seriously considering moving my rounds to a secure facility, even if it means some extra fees. The peace of mind might be worth it. Providence has some good local safe deposit options, but for an IRA, it feels different.
