Gold IRA storage fees - what's everyone paying these days?

    Key Takeaways
    • Been in the gold game for a good 15 years now, ever since my initial rollover from a traditional 401(k) when I left my last gig in the oil fields.
    • Currently, I’m paying a flat annual fee for my segregated storage.
    • I remember back in '08, right after the market crash, those fees felt like pocket change compared to the gains I was seeing.

Been in the gold game for a good 15 years now, ever since my initial rollover from a traditional 401(k) when I left my last gig in the oil fields. I’ve always held a decent chunk of my retirement in physical gold and silver – somewhere in the ballpark of $750k currently – and it’s been a solid hedge against a lot of the craziness we’ve seen. My custodian has always been pretty transparent, but I’ve been wondering if I’m still getting a fair shake on storage fees, especially with the value of my holdings increasing.

Currently, I’m paying a flat annual fee for my segregated storage. It's been consistent for years, but with inflation and everything else, I'm starting to question if there are better options out there, or if I should just stick with what I know. I remember back in '08, right after the market crash, those fees felt like pocket change compared to the gains I was seeing. Now it's not so much about the gains this year, but more about optimizing every aspect of my holdings.

My custodian is reliable, and I haven't had any issues with them, but I’m always open to hearing about others' experiences. Are any of you guys seeing more competitive rates for segregated storage? Or are most of you on a percentage basis? I’m based out of Dallas, so any recommendations for custodians with strong reputations in the Texas market would be appreciated too, though I'm not afraid to look nationwide. Just trying to make sure my hard-earned assets aren't getting eaten away by unnecessary costs over the long run.

I was pretty skeptical about another gold IRA forum but the tools here on GIRAB actually surprised me — the calculator alone saved me hours of spreadsheet work.

Hey, glad to hear your gold investments have been working out! I'm in a similar boat, though not quite as long in the game. I rolled over an old 403(b) a few years back and went with physical gold. Definitely feel better having some tangible assets outside of just stocks and bonds.

My current custodian charges around $250 annually for storage on about $500k worth of gold. Sounds like you're getting a pretty good deal at $300 a year for $750k. Makes me wonder if I should be shopping around a bit more!

Hey, interesting post! Glad to hear the gold has been a good hedge for you after all these years. Quick question: when you say "physical gold and silver," are you storing all of that in an actual vault somewhere, or do you have some of it at home? Just curious about the storage solution for such a large amount, especially with those fees you're talking about.

Honestly, the whole "storage fees" angle often feels a bit overblown, especially for folks with a significant holding like yours. I mean, for $750k, the actual percentage you're paying for secure, insured storage is likely pretty negligible in the grand scheme of things, especially compared to potential market gains (or even just protection against inflation). It's a necessary evil for physical, sure, but sometimes I wonder if people get too hung up on the *cost* of security rather than the *value* of having it.

Hey, that's a decent chunk of change you've got in precious metals! When it comes to storage fees, it's definitely worth checking if your custodian offers segregated storage. Some companies charge more for it, but for a portfolio your size, it can be a worthwhile peace of mind knowing your specific bars/coins aren't commingled with others. A quick search on "gold IRA segregated storage benefits" might give you some good info to consider if you're not already doing it!

I rolled over about $80k last year. Honestly the hardest part was just picking which metals to hold. Still second-guessing myself.
