Gold IRA Storage Fees - What's a decent rate these days?

    Key Takeaways
    • Hey folks, I'm hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here.
    • Been pretty happy with it so far, knowing I've got that solid asset tucked away.
    • My portfolio is sitting around the low end of $200k right now, mostly American Eagles and some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs.

Hey folks, I'm hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here. I've had a Gold IRA since right after '08 – that financial crisis definitely taught me a thing or two about market stability, which is why I got into physical gold in the first place. Been pretty happy with it so far, knowing I've got that solid asset tucked away. My portfolio is sitting around the low end of $200k right now, mostly American Eagles and some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs.

My question is about storage fees. I'm currently paying around 0.8% annually with my custodian for segregated storage. I live in Phoenix, so I know there are a few options around, but I've always just stuck with my original guy. Inflation's got me looking at every penny these days, and even though 0.8% doesn't sound like much, on a ~$200k portfolio, that adds up to a noticeable chunk of change yearly.

Is 0.8% competitive these days for segregated storage? I've seen some places advertise lower, but I'm always a bit wary of hidden fees or compromised security. I'm a retired teacher, so I appreciate reliability and clear pricing. Are there any custodians you all would recommend looking into, or perhaps questions I should be asking my current custodian to make sure I'm getting a fair shake?

I'm really trying to make sure I'm not overpaying while still keeping my assets secure. Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Totally get where you're coming from. I also jumped into a Gold IRA after '08 for the same reasons. My storage fees have been pretty consistent, thankfully. I'm paying around 0.6% annually on my vaulted gold, which felt fair when I signed up. Curious to see what others are paying these days, though, maybe I'm overpaying!

Hey, that's a good question. I'm wondering, since you've had your Gold IRA since '08, have your storage fees generally been a flat rate, or have you seen them fluctuate based on the value of your holdings over the years?

Interesting to see everyone's take on storage fees. While I get wanting to optimize for the lowest cost, sometimes the cheapest option isn't always the *best* option, especially for something as important as your retirement assets. Have you guys factored in things like insurance coverage specifics, or the accessibility/reputation of the vault itself, beyond just the annual percentage? A slightly higher fee for ironclad peace of mind might be worth it in the long run.

Hey, good question! Storage fees can definitely eat into returns if you're not careful. One thing I always recommend people look into is whether their custodian offers segregated storage vs. commingled. Segregated often costs a bit more, but it means your specific bars are individually identified and stored, which can offer extra peace of mind. Some custodians bundle it, others charge extra.

For a handy breakdown of what different types of storage entail and how fees are typically structured, I found this article pretty useful: https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/090915/how-store-physical-gold-your-ira.asp
