Been seeing a lot of chatter lately on forum about gold IRA minimums and it got me thinking. I've had a decent chunk of my retirement in gold for over 20 years now, ever since I retired from the auto industry here in Detroit. My portfolio is sitting comfortably between $500k and $1M, and a good portion of that is in precious metals. Back when I really started diversifying into gold, the minimums felt a lot different, or maybe I just wasn't paying as close attention since I was rolling over a larger 401k.
I feel like the landscape for new investors might be a bit different now. For those of you who've recently gotten into a gold IRA, or are looking at it, what are you seeing as the typical true minimums? Not just what a company advertises, but what practically makes sense without fees eating you alive. I'm talking about the sweet spot where you get some solid exposure without feeling like you're overpaying on transaction costs or storage compared to the actual metal you're holding.
I'm genuinely curious because my son, who's in his late 30s, has been asking me about getting started. He's got some capital saved but isn't looking to drop six figures right off the bat like I did back in the day. He's also been looking at that Gold IRA Quiz to get a basic understanding of how they work, which I think is a great starting point for anyone. Are any of you seeing options for, say, $25k-50k that are still viable? Or is that really too low to make a solid impact in a gold IRA given current market conditions and fees? Appreciate any insights you all have!
