Thought I’d share my recent move because I know a lot of us here are probably wondering about it. Just added a decent chunk of silver to my Gold IRA. For years, I was pretty much 100% gold, mostly American Gold Eagles and some South African Krugerrands. Had about $750k in there, you know, planning for the succession of my logistics business here in Memphis and just generally shoring things up for retirement. Gold felt like the ultimate safe haven, especially with all the economic uncertainty we've been seeing.
But the market movements over the last year or so really got me thinking. Gold's done well, don't get me wrong, but silver seems to have more upside potential right now, and it's still relatively affordable. I spoke to my advisor, crunched some numbers, and decided to rebalance about 15% of my precious metals portfolio into silver. Picked up mostly American Silver Eagles and some Canadian Maple Leafs. The premiums were a little higher than I'd like, but that's just the game right now, I guess.
My reasoning is pretty straightforward: industrial demand for silver is only going to increase with all the tech and green energy stuff coming online. Plus, historically, silver tends to move with gold but with higher volatility, which means bigger swings both ways. I'm comfortable with that given my longer-term outlook. It feels good to have that extra layer of diversification in there, especially considering the sheer size of the portfolio. Anyone else made a similar move recently? What were your triggers?
