Thought I'd share a quick insight from my recent portfolio review. For years, my focus with precious metals has been almost exclusively on gold for my IRA rollover. It's been good to me, particularly given the volatility we've seen since I retired from the tech scene a few years back. My roughly 1.5 million in gold has certainly been a steady anchor in my overall 4 million-plus portfolio. Based here in Palm Beach, I’ve always appreciated the tangible nature of these assets – far more comforting than some of the paper promises out there.
However, after a rather long chat with my advisor (who eventually agreed with my admittedly very persistent questioning), I decided to start allocating a portion of my metals IRA to silver as well. We're not talking a massive shift, but a solid 20% of my new contributions and a small rebalance from existing gold is now going into silver. My rationale was pretty straightforward: While gold acts as that ultimate store of value and inflation hedge, silver has incredible industrial demand alongside its monetary properties. I see huge upside potential, especially with the push towards green energy and electronics. It just felt… incomplete without it.
It also provides a bit more diversification within the precious metals space itself. I mean, all my eggs were technically in one basket, even if that basket was gold. The price point for silver also allows for more physical quantity per dollar, which somehow scratches that collector’s itch a bit more for me, even though it's all held by a custodian. I'm genuinely excited to see how this plays out over the next 5-10 years. My personal goal is to have about 25% of my overall portfolio in precious metals, split roughly 80/20 gold to silver.
Anyone else here made a similar move recently? What were your key deciding factors? Are there any downsides to silver in an IRA that I might be overlooking, beyond the typical volatility?
