Been in the gold game for about 15 years now, started back when my retirement advisor first pitched it as a hedge against inflation. Made a few decent moves, learned a lot. My current portfolio sits somewhere between $800k-$900k, with a good chunk of that diversified into precious metals through an IRA. I've always gone the traditional route, mainly because of the immediate tax deductions. Being in the oil industry here in Dallas, those deductions always felt like a no-brainer, especially during the higher earning years.
Lately, though, I’ve been kicking around the idea of converting some of my traditional IRA — including the gold portion — to a Roth. With the market being as volatile as it is, and frankly, who knows what taxes will look like in 10-15 years when I actually plan to tap these funds, the idea of tax-free withdrawals in retirement is mighty appealing. My concern, naturally, is the tax hit on the conversion. It’s not insignificant, and I'd have to pay that out of pocket. It still feels like a gamble on future tax rates, but a gamble that might pay off big time.
I’ve been reading a lot of conflicting advice, and frankly, my advisor is a bit hesitant because of the upfront cost. He’s more of a “play it safe” kind of guy, which I generally appreciate, but I also don’t want to leave money on the table. Has anyone here moved their gold IRA from traditional to Roth? What was your experience like? Did the conversion tax hit feel worth it in the long run?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from folks who have similar portfolio sizes or who have gone through this with precious metals. It feels like a slightly different beast than just converting stock holdings. Any insights or war stories would be seriously appreciated. Trying to weigh all the angles before I make a big move.
