That's why I've had about $150k of my retirement portfolio stashed in a Gold IRA for the last five years. It's been a solid anchor, especially when the market gets squirrelly.

My accountant recently brought up the idea of potentially switching some of those funds to a Roth Gold IRA, or at least contributing more to a Roth in the future. Right now, it's all traditional, so I'm getting the tax deduction on contributions, but the withdrawals will be taxed later. The main hang-up for me is the upfront tax hit if I convert any of my existing traditional Gold IRA to Roth. That's a chunky sum to shell out, even if it might save me more in the long run.
