Anyone done a 401k to Gold IRA transfer lately? What was your timeline?
- •Okay, so I'm seriously considering rolling over a big chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA.
- •My biggest concern is minimizing the time the funds are out of the market, even if it's just temporarily.
- •I'm not looking to move everything, probably around $150k-$200k into physical gold and maybe some silver to diversify a bit.
Okay, so I'm seriously considering rolling over a big chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I've got about half a million in various retirement accounts right now, but a good chunk of that is still sitting in a 401k from a previous company out of state. My current financial advisor, who's based here in SLC with me and actually specializes in precious metals IRAs, has been really helpful explaining everything, but I'm trying to get a real-world feel for how long this process actually takes.
My biggest concern is minimizing the time the funds are out of the market, even if it's just temporarily. I'm not looking to move everything, probably around $150k-$200k into physical gold and maybe some silver to diversify a bit. I understand there are a few steps involved – contacting the old 401k administrator, setting up the new Gold IRA custodian, selecting the approved metals, etc. I'm just picturing a bunch of paperwork and phone calls, and I'd love to hear from anyone who's recently gone through this. Did it drag on forever, or was it surprisingly smooth?
Specifically, how long did it take from the moment you initiated the request with your old 401k provider until the funds were actually settled and invested in your chosen metals within the new IRA? I know every situation is different, but a general timeframe would be super helpful for setting my expectations. Did any of you run into unexpected delays, and if so, what were they? Any tips on making it as quick and painless as possible?
