Alright, so I’m really trying to get a handle on the actual timeline for rolling over a 401k into a Gold IRA. I’m an old-school logistics guy here in Memphis, and I like things to run on schedule. I'm looking at moving about $600k out of my old company's 401k – the one from before I bought out my partners and started my own outfit. My succession plan is fully in motion, and I want to get this capital protected and out of the stock market as much as possible before I fully step back in a couple of years.
I've done my research, talked to a few different precious metals dealers, and the general consensus seems to be "2-4 weeks" from initial contact to physical metal in the vault. But let's be real, how accurate is that in practice? Was there any red tape you ran into that held things up? Did your old custodian drag their feet? I’m imagining worse-case scenarios here, like some ancient fax machine being the final hold-up. I've been eyeing a mix of bullion and maybe some premium coins – not sure if that impacts the timeline at all.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who did a direct rollover, not an indirect one. The last thing I want is to accidentally trigger a tax event because of some clerical error. I've been using that Tax Calculator tool a lot lately to double-check all the angles on potential penalties and taxes, and it's been super helpful, but still, I'm always paranoid about the unexpected. Did any of you have to chase down documents repeatedly?
Basically, what's a realistic, boots-on-the-ground timeline I should be mentally preparing for? Any insights, horror stories, or surprisingly smooth experiences would be genuinely appreciated. Trying to avoid any unnecessary stress during this transition phase of my business and my life.
