My 401k to Gold IRA transfer timeline experience (it was slower than I hoped)

Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on getting some physical gold into my retirement portfolio. Being a small business owner in Denver, I'm always looking for ways to diversify beyond just the market, especially with all the talk about inflation and economic uncertainty. I've been eyeing a Gold IRA for a while, and after seeing my 401k take a bit of a hit last year, I decided now was the time to act. My portfolio is probably in the $75k-ish range right now for the transfer, nothing crazy, but enough that I want to see it protected.
I started the whole process about six weeks ago, contacting a few different custodians and dealers. I finally settled on one that felt good. The initial paperwork for the direct rollover from my old 401k was pretty straightforward, mostly just signing things electronically. That first week felt productive. Then came the waiting game. My old 401k provider (a big name, you'd know it) took forever to release the funds. Seriously, it felt like two whole weeks just for that step! I was calling daily, and it was a bit frustrating. I even joked with my wife about driving down there myself if I could.
Once the funds finally hit my new Gold IRA custodian's account, things picked up a little. It was maybe another 3-4 business days for the actual purchase of the gold to clear. I went with a mix of American Gold Eagles and some South African Krugerrands, felt like a good balance. The final step, getting it shipped to the depository, added another week. All in all, from my first contact to the gold actually sitting in the vault, it was almost five weeks. I was really hoping for closer to three or four, so it definitely felt longer than advertised.
Has anyone else experienced a similar timeline for their 401k to Gold IRA transfer? Was your old 401k provider the bottleneck, or was it a different part of the process? I'm curious if my experience was typical or if I just had a slow provider. Definitely glad it's done now, feeling a lot calmer about having some hard assets in there.
