Rollover took way longer than expected, anyone else?

Just went through the whole 401k to Gold IRA rollover song and dance, and man, it was a longer play than I anticipated. I'm sitting on about $180k that I wanted to get into some physical metals – diversify a bit from the market's swings, especially with everything going on. Started the process about three months ago, thinking it would be a relatively quick transfer, maybe a month tops. I've seen enough economic cycles in my time in Vegas casinos to know that sometimes you gotta hedge your bets, and gold felt like a smart move.
The initial paperwork with the custodian was straightforward enough. Got everything signed and sent off, and then... crickets. Had to follow up a few times, felt like I was constantly chasing. My old 401k provider seemed to drag their feet on releasing the funds, and then the new custodian had their own internal processing times. Ended up taking almost exactly twelve weeks from start to finish to actually see the gold allocated and confirmation on my end. I know these things aren't instant, but that felt excessive for a direct rollover. My understanding was always that a direct rollover should be relatively seamless to avoid tax implications.
Anyone else have a similar experience? Did I just get unlucky with my particular providers, or is this extended timeline pretty standard for a larger rollover of this type? I'm not complaining about the end result – glad to have a chunk of my retirement in something tangible – but the waiting game was definitely a test of patience. Just curious if I should have set my expectations differently for future transfers, or if there are companies that are significantly faster.
I'm always looking at risk management strategies, especially for my retirement funds. With my background, I understand that sometimes the odds aren't in your favor, but this felt like slow-playing a hand when I wanted to cash out and re-deal. Let me know your thoughts!
