Rollover took WAY longer than expected. Anyone else?

    Key Takeaways
    • I'm a doctor here in Boston, and while I'm used to things taking time, I was genuinely surprised.
    • I initiated the process about six weeks ago, planning to move a substantial chunk – around $200k – from my old employer's 401k into my new Gold IRA.
    • My provider told me 2-3 weeks, tops, for everything to clear and the precious metals to be purchased and secured in the depository.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

Just went through a 401k to Gold IRA rollover, focusing on some fractional gold coins I've been eyeing, and the timeline was… well, let's just say a lot less "express" than some folks lead you to believe. I'm a doctor here in Boston, and while I'm used to things taking time, I was genuinely surprised.

I initiated the process about six weeks ago, planning to move a substantial chunk – around $200k – from my old employer's 401k into my new Gold IRA. My provider told me 2-3 weeks, tops, for everything to clear and the precious metals to be purchased and secured in the depository. I’ve got a pretty diversified portfolio, with gold making up a nice 10-15% of my overall holdings (which are in the $750k range), so this was a significant addition.

Turns out, the 401k administrator was the bottleneck. So much paperwork, so many "security checks," and then the check itself felt like it travelled by snail mail from the 1950s. It eventually cleared, and the coins are now locked away, but I was definitely a little antsy watching the market those extra few weeks. My provider did keep me in the loop, but it was still frustrating.

Has anyone else experienced similar delays? Or did I just get unlucky with my particular 401k administrator? What was your actual timeline from initiating the rollover to having the gold in your account?

Totally get this. I did a similar rollover last year from an old 403b, and it felt like it dragged on forever. I was trying to get into some of those 1/10th oz coins too, and the whole "funding" part of it felt like watching paint dry. My rep was great, but even she seemed a bit frustrated with the back-end delays.

I think for some of these niche assets, the process just isn't as streamlined as a typical stock transfer. Glad you eventually got it sorted, but yeah, definitely not the "quick and easy" many might expect.

Hey, glad it finally went through! When you say "fractional gold coins," are we talking specific numismatic pieces or just smaller denominations of common bullion coins?

Totally get the frustration, especially with specific coins in mind. While it's easy to blame the Gold IRA process itself, sometimes the *type* of investment you're going for can really slow things down. Fractional gold coins, for example, aren't always sitting in a vault ready to ship like common bullion. If they're sourcing specific, harder-to-find items, that adds a whole layer of logistics. So, while the rollover itself has its quirks, it's worth considering if your specific choices contributed to the longer lead time too.
