Gold IRA Rebalancing - Sell off some rounds for stocks?
- •Thinking about my portfolio lately and could use some outside perspectives.

Thinking about my portfolio lately and could use some outside perspectives. My Gold IRA is sitting at around $80k right now, mostly in 1oz Gold American Eagles and a good chunk of generic rounds I picked up during a dip a couple years back. The rest of my retirement is pretty well diversified, mostly VOO, some bonds, and a few individual stocks I like. I'm an insurance agent here in Omaha, 42 years old, so still a good 20+ years until I'm thinking about seriously drawing down.
My precious metals allocation is probably higher than I initially planned, somewhere around 18-20% of my total portfolio. I’ve always seen gold as a hedge, a way to add some stability when everything else goes sideways. It’s definitely done its job in some respects, but seeing the market climb this past year has me wondering if I’m missing out on some growth. I'm not looking to dump all my gold by any means, but I'm debating whether to trim maybe 10-15k from the gold side and redeploy it into more traditional equities. Maybe some more VOO or even some sector-specific ETFs.
The "sell low, buy high" fear is real with stocks, but "sell high" in gold feels like it makes sense right now. The rounds are probably the easiest to move without emotional attachment since they were more of a speculative play at the time. My main concern is transaction costs and the tax implications within the IRA – although rebalancing within an IRA doesn't trigger immediate taxes, which is a relief. Still, it’s a mental hurdle to actively sell off something I’ve intentionally built up. Has anyone here significantly rebalanced their Gold IRA out of precious metals and into something else? How did you approach it logistically? Any regrets?
