Okay, so I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately, especially from newer investors, about minimums for setting up a Gold IRA. Thought I'd throw my experience into the ring and see what others are doing. I did a 401k rollover into a Gold IRA back in late 2019, right before things really started getting wild. My starting stake was pretty substantial, north of $750k from a rather healthy career of building luxury ski-in/ski-out places up here in Aspen.
My thinking then, which frankly hasn't changed much, was diversification and a hedge. I'm heavy into real estate, and while that's been phenomenal, you never want all your eggs in one basket, especially with fiat currency getting printed like crazy. The 401k rollover was relatively painless, though the paperwork is always a drag. The provider I went with (not gonna shill anyone specific, do your own DD) had a stated minimum around $50k, but let's be real, you're not getting good terms or much institutional attention with that kind of sum. I was looking for a custodian that could handle larger allocations and offer a wider range of approved metals.
I'm curious what others' entry points were, particularly those of you who also rolled over significant amounts. Did you hit a higher minimum because of the metals you wanted, or was it more about the custodian you chose? I've been adding to my physical holdings since, both in the IRA and just outright, and the current market's got me thinking about adding more. What's your average buy-in for your PMs in your IRA these days? Any regrets on not starting with more, or less?
