Been in the gold game for a good 15 years now, mostly through a Gold IRA. Started off small, but after a few good runs in oil and gas, my portfolio's sitting comfortably somewhere between $500k and $1M. Now, I'm looking at rolling over another chunk of an old 401k – nothing crazy, probably around $75k-100k, to diversify a bit more out of my company’s stock. I'm trying to figure out what the minimums are looking like these days for a good, reputable custodian.
Back when I first set up my main Gold IRA, the minimums were a lot steeper, or at least they felt that way. I'm based here in Dallas, and while I've got my established relationships, I'm curious if anyone has been shopping around lately for rollovers specifically? Are there still a lot of those $25,000 or $50,000 minimums, or are some pushing even higher now with the increased interest in precious metals? I'm not trying to cheap out, obviously, but I also don't want to overcommit if there are better options out there that don't force my hand on a larger initial transfer.
My concern is less about meeting a specific threshold and more about finding a good balance between a reasonable minimum and solid service. I’ve heard some horror stories about custodians with low minimums but terrible customer support or outrageous fees on the backend. I definitely don't want to get stuck in that trap. What are your recent experiences with different providers for a rollover of this size? Any particular companies standing out, good or bad?
Also, out of curiosity, if you're relatively new to this, have you tried that Gold IRA Quiz I've seen floating around? I ran through it myself and it was surprisingly comprehensive for folks just starting to learn about Gold IRAs and figuring out if it's the right move for them. Might be a good starting point for anyone feeling overwhelmed by all the options and minimum investment talk.
